Summer/Fall 2017 Transfer Reviews - UGA Undergraduate Admissions Summer/Fall 2017 Transfer Reviews In mid-February, our office started reviewing Summer transfer applications, as well as a small number of fall transfer decisions. The deadline for summer has not passed and we are still receiving applications and documents, so we cannot say how long it will take us to finish or guess when you will hear a decision. If you applied early for summer or fall, please be sure to check your Status page to see if we have your most up-to-date transcript(s). If you were enrolled in coursework last fall and have not sent a transcript with your fall grades, you should have one sent as soon as possible. To be complete and ready to review, we must have a transcript from each college/university you havepreviouslyattended. If we see that you were enrolled in courses last fall and we do not have a transcript with those grades, you are not complete and this will delay a review of your application. Once we complete the Summer transfer reviews, we will then begin to focus full time on our review Fall transfer applicants. Just like the summer files, we do not know how many will apply, how long each review will take, when you will hear, etc. The best this is to just be patient as we review the files. As well, Fall transfer applicants need to make sure we have the most up-to-date transcripts, and that we have individual transcripts from each college attended, even if it was dual enrollment work in high school. One change for this years transfer decisions is that we have a new admissions system, which allows for a little quicker review of files, but more importantly for communications to go out once a change to your application status (generally an admit or deny decision) has been made. We will be releasing transfer decisions every Friday late afternoon (starting this Friday, 2/24), and emails go out about 15 minutes after a decision is released. This means there is no need to constantly check on your status page for a change, and it allows us to perform a number of checks on decisions prior to releasing them. Go Dawgs!

Advantages A properly sited and engineered landfill offers much better control of the environmental and health hazards associated with waste disposal than a garbage dump or burning pit. After a landfill has been closed, the site is landscaped and can be converted into a park, tobogganing hills, golf courses, etc. A new landfill can also serve as an incentive for increased environmental awareness in the community. In communities currently using a garbage dump or burning pit, the regular collection of community solid waste and its disposal in a landfill encourages the separation and safe disposal of hazardous waste and can even serve as a starting point for a recycling program. A well-run landfill can become a source of pride to a First Nations community, allowing the community to serve as a model of environmentally responsible community solid waste management. Disadvantages A key disadvantage of the community solid waste landfill relates more to public perception than with a flaw in the solid waste management method itself. Many people, usually confusing the landfill with the uncontrolled garbage dump, react negatively and strongly to the idea of building a new community solid waste landfill in their community. One operational disadvantage is the difficulty in applying cover materials in winter months. The article relates logic with human perception and since in perception there are always judgement errors due to the innate subjectivity, hence it also logically leads to subjectivity in logic which is disturbing to some extent. This is primarily because something (logic) which I have assumed to be infallible and open to interpretation is essentially a subjective phenomenon which depends on the circumstances and perception. The concept of good judgement errors is also engaging especially with the example of Post-It as it aims to establish that judgement errors are all too pervasive and thus need to be better understood. The author has also questioned the link of logic with rationality and in this manner questioned the relationship which I have innately assumed to be true because of the empirical instances regarding of the co-existence of the two. Further using data, the author also seems to question the impact of making representations differently on the way the information derived from these talks is eventually processed leading to multiple variants. Using the Wason selection task, it is apparently clear that logic is infallible and more importantly so subjective that makes it difficult to predict provided proper modelling has not been done. While the author reluctantly decides to assume that logic is free from the effect of semantics and representations but then is able to defy the same using valid arguments. The underlying cause for the same is convincing since it is attributed to the different manners in which information is processed by different human beings in different ways and hence the same information may lead to varied judgements and to call just one judgement as being correct and the remaining ones as being fallacious or dubious is a rather presumptive assumption. This idea actually appeals to me as I have seen in numerous instances when discussing something with friends, the conclusion they draw from a piece of information may be starkly different from mine but at the same time they may have an underlying logic as st rong as mine because essentially logic is a subjective thing which cannot be assumed to so objective as we see. I particular like the stance the author takes in the sense he is not against the existence of logic but the obsession with its objectivity and the biases and errors during its application. Further the obsession with logic as has been advocated by the author actually in counter-productive for the proponents of logic since during their application of logic with scant regard to the context and semantics has resulted in judgement bias being induced in their works. This is made apparent from the various interpretations of the overconfidence bias. I was surprised to learn about the better than average interpretation provided by the author as to how commonly we assume that the underlying distribution is symmetric and additionally it never comes to our mind (including mine) that the average we define for most is highly subjective and so is the final conclusion. Mrs Mallard Character Analysis Louise Mallard is the protagonist of The Story of an Hour. The entire story is about her preservation. Chopin portrays Mrs. Mallard as a woman who is in deep suffering. She is not only suffering from a marriage she is not happy with, but she is also suffering from her medical condition. As if she had not suffered enough, she also puts a threat to her own life. We see this when Josephine is knocking on her door while she refuses to open it (Chopin). What is unknown to Josephine however is that her sister is in fact not suffering but savoring the moment. When she receives the news of the demise of her husband, she responds by weeping profusely in her sisters arms. In this essay I will discuss the meaning of the two poems and what the poet is trying to get the reader to think and / or realise. The poem describes four people held together for a moment at a red traffic light. There are two scavengers, garbage men 'on their way home' after their round, and two beautiful people, an elegant couple 'on the way to his architect's office'. The garbage men’s day ends where the young couple's begins. The poet compares the two pairs in detail, and then seems to ask - at the end of the poem - whether America really is a democracy. The poem's structure is fairly free. The poet doesn't use punctuation; instead, he begins a new line when he wants us to pause in our reading. This slows the poem down and gives us time to appreciate each idea. The poem appears very fragmented on the page. This might suggest the fragmented or 'broken' nature of society? The language used in this poem is used in different ways to convey his ideas. For example; the title shows us straight away that the poem will be about the contrasts between two pairs of people. ‘Scavengers’ is a belittling term for the garbage men because it suggests that they live off the rubbish of others - a scavenger beetle lives off rotting flesh. However, Beautiful People is a compliment. So, right from the start, we feel the garbage men are at a disadvantage. In line 7 Ferlinghetti writes the garbage men are 'looking down' into the Mercedes. This is literally because the garbage truck is taller than the car; there is a hidden ironic message too. You might have expected the rich couple to 'look down on' the garbage men, not the other way round. The descriptions of the four people are very visual, making it easy to imagine the scene. Appearances tell us a lot. The rich couple are very fashionable: he has an expensive 'hip three-piece linen suit' (line 11) while her blond hair is 'casually coifed' (line 13). On the other hand, the garbage men are grungy (line 17). The younger one has sunglasses & long hair (line 24) just like the Mercedes driver, which forces us to compare the two. The conformity of the suburbia is evident in the scene where residences of the suburbia robotically leave their picture perfect houses with clean cut lawns to work. The dichotomies of light and dark lighting, the suburbia’s commitment in submitting to conformity provides a sense of uneasiness and a sinister atmosphere for the audience, because the audience is challenged to reason that the Suburbia is actually the damaged world, despite the eerie aura that Edward’s home project through its dark lightning and threatening appearance.
